kitschy food fun
Posted by Sarah
This past Sunday, I made a trip out to my favorite used book warehouse in search of some interesting cookbooks. I rejected my first find, The Esquire Companion to Food, on the basis of having lots of words and no pictures, a decision I started to regret about as soon as I had pulled out of the parking lot, but I did find a copy of the Brennan’s New Orleans cookbook that I just couldn’t pass up. The real gem of the day, though, was a deck of French Recipe Cards from 1969. It’s a real deck of playing cards that are about four times the size of regular playing cards. Each card is printed on one side with this very sixties blue, red and pink design and on the other is a French recipe with the number and suit in the corners. Not surprisingly, the recipes are simplified and there’s nothing terribly fancy offered. However, as I love both kitsch and multi-purpose food-related items (like colanders that can also be used as steamers and dual-ended spatulas) these cards are really up my alley. I have yet to actually make any of the recipes, but I’ll be sure to report the results here as soon as I do.
